It seems like everyone is trying to harness the power of social media nowadays to promote their business and drive sales.

BUT, just because you CAN have a presence on social media, doesn’t necessarily mean you NEED a presence on social media in order to achieve business goals.

This may seem counterproductive to what most marketing practices encourage, but hear me out.

If your business doesn’t benefit from social media marketing, wouldn’t you rather invest your limited time and resources in other marketing avenues in order to effectively promote your business and communicate with your audience?

Here are three reasons why your business doesn’t need social media marketing, and alternative avenues you can take instead:

    1. Your target market isn’t even on social media

Social media can be a great platform to reach your target audience, but what if your target audience isn’t even on social media?

Before investing in a social media strategy, it’s important to do some market research and see if people are already using social media to search for your products and services.

If not, it may be a better idea to focus your marketing efforts into other avenues, in order to effectively reach your target audience and promote your brand.

    Alternative Avenue 1: Google Ads

There are several alternative avenues to social media you can take in order to reach your target audience.

Firstly, you can invest in Google Ads. While social media channels such as Facebook are enormous advertising platforms, if you can’t reach your target audience on social media, what’s the point of spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on ads on their platforms?

Search engine advertising allows you to reach a wider audience and sell your products directly to consumers who are searching for your products. Google Ads gives you the ability to create a variety of advertisements, from banner ads to video ads.

    Alternative Avenue 2: Email Marketing

Another avenue would be to invest in email marketing efforts in order to reach your customers directly.

You can create email opt-in forms on your website to build your email list by offering customers discounts or incentives. Once you’ve built an email list, you can send company and product information directly to customers, who you know are already interested in your services.

    2. Your products or services are better showcased off social media

What if your services and brand don’t require visual representation, wouldn’t that defeat the whole purpose of having an Instagram or Pinterest account?

If you find it difficult curating visual content around your business, then maybe it’s worth exploring different avenues for showcasing your products/services, rather than investing time in social media and pulling your hair out trying to think of content week to week.

    Alternative Avenue 1: Blogging

Having a blog on your website is a great way to establish yourself as a content expert and promote both your business and expertise through search engine results.

Blog posts allow you to share descriptive and engaging content, without needing innovative or custom photography. You can write short or longer form blog posts that are specific to the keywords and questions people are searching in your field.

To further promote these blog posts, you can share them via email. This will help increase traffic to your site, and benefit your ranking in search engines.

    Alternative Avenue 2: Testimonials

According to BrightLocal,  88% of people trust online reviews written by other consumers as much as they trust recommendations from personal contacts.

If social media isn’t the right fit for your business, you can collect testimonials from previous customers on Google, Yelp, Trip Advisor – or whichever platform would be most effective in promoting your products/services.

These testimonials (if mostly positive) can help your SEO and reputation.

    3. You don’t have social media expertise

Social media marketing may be more harmful than beneficial if you are not doing it properly.

From strategic content planning to effective scheduling and engagement, social media management can be a full time job, and requires careful planning and effort in order to see results.

Unless you hire a professional social media company to manage your social media channels, it can be quite difficult to manage your own social media platforms while running a business.

    Alternative Avenue: Hire Experts

If your target audience is on social media, but you just lack social media experience, hire expert(s) to take care of your social media presence so that you have more time to focus on your business.
